It's a Wrap...

The "Whistle-Stop Mixed-up Tournament,"

held on Thursday, December 8th, was a grand success with 40 players in 2 groups changing courts, partners and opponents every 10 minutes or 15 points. A wild morning at the Wasatch Rec Center and so so much fun! Thanks to tournament directors Bill Miano and Ken Fakler, and assistant scorekeeper/recorder Karen Fakler, who kept us all on track and moving! And to Leslie Oksner who provided snacks to keep our energy flowing!

First and second-place winners were announced and prizes awarded at the holiday party on Friday night. In Group 1, honors went to Myrna Lueck (1st) and Kevin Priebe (2nd) and in Group 2, Dale Beeman (1st) and Warren Dinter (2nd). Sportsmanship awards were presented to Alyce Weisiger and Carol Lee. Congratulations to them and to all who participated!

We hope to continue a tradition of fun tourneys in 2017! Your input is always welcome!

The Mingle Jingle holiday party and annual meeting,

held on Friday, December 9th, was attended by about 50 members who loaded the appetizer table with great food. Board members outdid themselves with a wide assortment of delectable desserts.

Outgoing President Lynn Keller spoke about the ongoing effort to build new courts in the Heber Valley and how the club's growth can be a motivating force with the city and county officials. The club will continue to make presentations and lobby for funds to accomplish this goal. If any club members are willing to help with this important project, please let the new Board know.

USAPA (USA Pickleball Association) and the Ambassadors program

Kris Beer talked about the USAPA, encouraging all to check out the website (www.USAPA.org) and to consider joining the organization, which offers several benefits to members. She also explained the purpose of the USAPA Ambassadors and her role to help grow the sport of pickleball in the local area. The Ambassadors Forum is a discussion center for all types of issues, rules, etiquette, tournaments, etc. Such things as the color of balls and how to break in the new Onix 2 ball (microwave, 40 rubs...and on and on), plus really important info about how to fundraise for new courts. The latest initiative of the Ambassadors is to reach out to the schools to start a pickleball program. Look for how the Heber Valley Pickleball Club could help in this effort in 2017. Members' ideas on how to proceed with this initiative would be great!

Across the country the sport is growing at about 10% annually, now with approximately 2.3 million players. With growth, however, comes the challenge of not having enough courts, a problem all areas face. Another common challenge is to provide good competition for all levels of players. The Club will be working on different ways to address this issue so everyone's needs are met. Also a self-ranking system will be published in the next blog for interested players.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Lynn thanked the board members who have served the past year and led the unanimous election of the new board, who will take over January 1st:

President - Mike Duggin
Vice-President - Cary Hobbs
Secretary - Karen Fakler
Treasurer - Carlos Monssen
Membership Chair - Doug Rosecrans
Social Co-Chairs - Alyce Weisiger & Judie Eaton
Training &Tournaments Co-Chairs - Ken Fakler & Mike Eaton
Past President - Lynn Keller

Mike Duggin promises to keep his words to a minimum
while Ken Fakler and Mike Altieri look on

President-elect Mike Duggin made a few remarks before the party resumed. It was a festive and fun evening in the beautifully decorated Valais clubhouse.

Action-Packed Pickleball

News from the HVPC

With almost 100 members, the club is a force to be reckoned with, at least on the pickleball court! We will continue to grow as members talk about the game to their family, friends, and neighbors. The HVPB Board has talked about expansion and the Catch-22 when we don't have many courts. But we think growth is inevitable as more people start playing. We all know it's ADDICTIVE!!!

Even with all 4 outdoor courts busy every morning, we're making it work. And while we're sitting and waiting our turn, we have a great time socializing.

We may want to explore setting up afternoon and/or evening play, or having certain days/times designated for different levels or men's/women's matches.

We are continuing to talk with Wasatch Co., Heber City, and Midway City about building new courts or converting existing ones to accommodate pickleball. If you have any ideas about ways to accomplish these goals, please let a board member know. And if you don't know your board members, see names and contact info below:

Tournaments

Women's and men's tournaments were held on Thursday, August 24th and Friday, August 25th. Fun, most certainly. Competitive, most definitely. Both mornings were cool but the matches were HOT!

Participants were as follows:

Women: Jan Altieri, Kris Beer, Kerry Belcher, Christina Berg, Bev Chaidez, Kim Clifton, Susan Dinter, Judie Eaton, Connie Greene, Karen Handler, Lynn Keller, Beth Lawrence, Carol Lee, Leslie Oksner, Myrna Perez, Sandy Smiley, Pat Sullivan, Alix Thayne, Jill Trimble, Alyce Weisiger, Marianne Wicks, and Barbara Gardner.

Men: Mike Altieri, Mike Duggin, Ken Fakler, Jerry Habeck, Cary Hobbs, Doug Jenkins, Ron Lee, Bill Miano, Ken Mickelsen, Carlos Monssen, Mickey Oksner, Jack Richardson, Doug Rosecrans, Mike Scheuer, Franz Siep, Chesley Smiley, Hans Stocker, and Jim Stuart.

Thanks to the superb organizational skills and expertise of Brenda Blackham. Assisted by Leslie Oksner and Pat Sullivan, there were very few hiccups, even when injuries forced some last minute substitutions.

Potluck

Saturday night at Valais Park, about 50 members gathered for some great food, with barbequed pork and chicken prepared by Mike Eaton. Two tables were loaded with side dishes, salads, and desserts...can you say, "Fabulous!!!"?

Leslie presented the awards to the winners of the tournament.

Women's

Sundance - Runner up: Beth Lawrence & Jill Trimble; 1st place: Christina Berg & Karen Handler

Beth & Jill
Chris & Karen
Wasatch - Runner up: Judy Eaton and Barbara Gardner; 1st place: Connie Greene & Kim Clifton;

Judie
Connie & Kim
Timpanogas - Runner Up: Kerry Belcher & Jan Altieri; 1st Place: Myrna Perez and Bev Chaidez

Jan

Men's

Wasatch - Runner Up: Mickey Oksner & Cary Hobbs; 1st place - Jerry Habeck & Carlos Monssen

Timpanogas - Runner Up: Chesley Smiley & Ken Fakler; 1st Place: Mike Altieri & Hans Stocker

A rousing game of Charades led by the Altieri's, followed by a "stupid game" of jelly beans led by Susan Dinter ("stupid" was indeed her description) rounded out the evening. Surprisingly, there were no winners of either of these events. But no losers either. A lot of good sports, though.

Stay turned for announcement of the next tournament for Mixed Doubles, some time in the fall.

More Clinic and Round Robin Details

Past Event - Wednesday, June 2

The Strokes and Strategies for Tournament Play was taught by Sarah Gaines, a 5.0 player and Huntsman Games gold medalist. This was not a drills clinic but individual evaluation for those players who may be interested in entering competition other than our local play and who may not yet have rankings by wonder what division they should enter.

Monday, July 11

A very busy day for the Heber Valley Pickleball Club. Fun, fun, and more fun!!

Brenda, Lauran, and Judy - Awesome instructors!
Judy gives Carol, Mike and others some tips
Mike, with partner Dale, serves as Brenda watches.
16 players joined Brenda, Judy, and Lauran Anderson on the Southfield Courts for more great instruction on basic strokes and strategies...and who doesn't need this? We are so fortunate to have such awesome players in our club who want us all to improve and are willing to spend time giving us tips and practice on a wide variety of skills.

13 others played a Whistle-Stop Round Robin at the Rec Center. The final championship game was a hard-fought battle hard for the honors, with Gary and Hans edging out Bev and Steve.

Steve and Bev take on Gary and Hans
The Southfield Park Pavilion was the gathering spot for a picnic lunch, attending by about 25 people. Thanks to Leslie and Bill for organizing the clinic and Round Robin play and to Leslie and Carol for once again mastering the details of the HVPC social event, complete with prizes going to those who answered the Pickleball Quiz correctly.
A beautiful day for a picnic!

Kimber gave a big thanks and lots of indoor and outdoor balls to the club for "including me in your activities these last couple of months, I am so grateful for any chance to play pickleball, and I have enjoyed meeting all of you. Play safe and Pickle on." She is heading north in her motorhome. Save travels, Kimber. Come back and play anytime!

More events are being planned for later in the summer. Stay tuned for emails from hebervalleypickleballclub@outlook.com.
